We had so much help and everyone worked so hard and cheerfully that we got it done sooner than we thought. We discovered the main leaking problem was due to our aesthetically appealing but structurally unsound skylights in the kitchen. The roof above was completely flat and so we had to do away with the sky lights and rebuild a slope to prevent the pooling and leaking of water.

A HUGE thanks to everyone who helped! Our 'weekend warriors':
Titus, Darryl, Adam, Gil, Lachlan, Steve and dad!
And Frank & his dad for lending us his trailer!
And Titus's dad for lending us all the tools!
And Sarah and Bonnie or lending us their husbands! And I could go on. You each supplied us with your special skills to get the job done and we really could NOT have done it without you.
I'm so happy this is a job you can cross of your list! Well done. :)
ReplyDeleteIt’s actually nice to have skylights installed in your home. They maximize the natural light in a dark room. In your case, it’s in the kitchen. However, if removing it is the perfect solution to get rid of the leaky roof, then do it. At least, you will never worry of the dripping water when it rains. You’ll get to enjoy your meal more. =)

Sometimes, it is merely a matter of organizing your priorities. A skylight might be a good investment, but in this case, it’s really better to give it up. You can get the same benefits through maximizing the use of windows, after all. And it is harder to remediate a leaking roof than the lack of natural light.

A skylight that is installed properly will have no leaks, or barely any roof problems, only benefits. I agree with Randell and Mariam that you can always maximize the use of windows to brighten up your kitchen. Still, don’t give up on the idea of installing skylights in your home.
